Carlos Azevedo is a research fellow at the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES) in Portugal. Previously, he was a visiting fellow at the Open University in the United Kingdom, where he completed his PhD in 2022, and an associate lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland.

Carlos’s research focuses on marketized higher education systems and their impact on students and academics. He is currently writing a monograph on students’ discourses and practices in marketized higher education systems (forthcoming with SRHE/Routledge). His research interests also include student activism, academic freedom, and the public–private mix in higher education.

He has presented his work at several international conferences, including EGOS, Scuola Democratica, and SRHE, and has been invited to speak at universities such as Aalborg University (Denmark) and Central European University (Austria). He also co-curated a webinar series on the theme Academic Freedom Under Attack.

Carlos is a member of the executive committee of the Council for the Defence of British Universities (CDBU) and is also a member of the British Sociological Association and the Society for Research in Higher Education. Before joining academia, he worked as a qualified lawyer and as a contract and project manager.
