Dr. Alexander Mitterle is a Educational Sociologist at the Centre for School and Educational Research at the Martin-Luther-University Halle Wittenberg. He holds a PhD from the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, was a member of the Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft’s (DFG) research group “mechanisms of elite education”, pursued research on higher education and social fields at the Institute for SME Research (ifm) at the University of Mannheim and as a guest researcher University of Hamburg. He is project lead of the BMBF-funded research project “M-Transform: how adaptable are private higher education institutions?”. He published on various aspects of higher education, including academization, stratification and competition, internationality, career pathways, admissions and private higher education Among his recent publications are the special issue “How do universities compete?” (2024 with R. Bloch, and Tim Seidenschnur, Studies in Higher Education) and the edited book “How Universities Transform Occupations and Work in the 21st Century: The Academization of German and American Economies. (2024 with M. Stock and D. Baker, Series: International Perspectives on Education and Society, Emerald).
